What do you Loki (and others) fans think? Was Loki in his usual evil right mind or being mind controlled via the Scepter by Thanos’s henchman?
I expect there will be some more exposition as what happened to him between his falling into a black hole at the end of Thor and his attack on Earth in The Avengers. There’s only a hint in a flashback of the Other threatening him with the Midgard Serpent, itself an allusion to Loki’s great punishment. It’s a creepy scene that has a sexual assault vibe to it.
Marvel's Disney+ series Loki might be heading back to The Avengers time period. Officially given the green light last year, Loki will bring back Tom Hiddleston as the titular God of Mischief for the seventh time. Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War following a confrontation with Thanos (Josh Brolin), but Avengers: Endgame saw an alternate Loki slip out of custody in 2012 thanks to the Tesseract. Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed the Loki series will center on that alternate Loki. Hiddleston will be joined by Sophia Di Martino in an unspecified role.
Last month, Loki officially started pre-production, signalling the series will begin shooting relatively soon. Hiddleston and others involved with the project have been careful not to reveal many details, though it's been confirmed that Loki will have a time-traveling element to it. Concept art for the series showed Loki in the 1970s, and a new tease from Twitter suggests he'll revisit his attempted invasion of Earth in 2012.
Marvel's prop master Russell Bobbitt, shared a video of Loki's scepter from The Avengers. During his attack on Earth, Loki used the scepter to take over the minds of several SHIELD agents, including Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The scepter contained the Mind Stone, which eventually gave Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and her brother Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) their powers and Vision (Paul Bettany) his life. Loki only possessed the scepter during The Avengers, however, after it was given to him by Thanos. Check out Bobbitt's Tweet below:
This glimpse of the scepter suggests that Loki will end up in 2012 again following his disappearing act in Endgame. However, for him to see and possibly regain the scepter, he would have to reach 2012 before the final battle, because in this Loki's timeline, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) took the scepter for the Avengers' Time Heist. Steve was supposed to return the Mind Stone to its proper time afterwards, but it's unclear if the scepter was included in that.
Loki's invasion of Earth is an interesting time to revisit, mainly because Marvel has suggested that Loki wasn't entirely responsible for his actions. In The Avengers, it was heavily implied he was only attacking Earth because he was being controlled by Thanos, though no explicit confirmation has been given on screen. The series could actually explore what Loki was thinking during that time and confirm once and for all whether he was under Thanos' control. Of course, there is also a chance the scepter won't play into Loki at all, and that Bobbitt was just teasing fans with one of Loki's most well-known props. Fans will have to wait until 2021 to find out.
