What if the series is about Loki in a sort of Asgard Purgatory?
The rulers of this Purgatory are intrigued by Loki's selflessness before his death and are trying to decide whether or not to send him to Valhalla because of all of the evil acts he commited. They offer him the chance to prove himself worthy of entry by going on a spirit quest. Along the way he faces different trials and is met with visions from his past that make him contemplate all of his actions in life. These visions could use both new footage and footage from the films.
I could also see Hela as a villain in it. She has become the ruler of Hel after her death and is trying to make Loki doubt himself along the way.
Not sure if they would actually do something like this, but I think it is a pretty neat idea.

Up until now I was half assuming it would be set during his time ruling Asgard but your idea would be really trippy and interesting, and would also serve as a strong epilogue of his character, defining if he’s worthy or even if he cares to be worthy.

Agreed, I think it would be a great way to give his character closure and explain what was going through his head at certain points in his life.

Update-apparently Tom Hiddleston will be narrating so I think it will be a prequel

I like this concept a great deal. It could be a neat reversal of the Balder story, too—everyone tries to bring Loki back to life instead of Balder. It might also give viewers a chance to see more of the nine worlds: we’ve obviously seen Asgard and Earth (“Midgard”), and we’ve seen Muspelheim (in Ragnarok) and Jotunheim (in The Dark World), if I’m not mistaken, which leaves us still with Hel, Niflheim, Vanaheim (would be very interesting to see how they handle this, as mythology is somewhat unclear on how the Vanir are connected to the Æsir), Alfheim, and Svartalfheim. Seeing some more Norse deities would be nice, too. Oh, and Gimlé if they get around to it. Also, great picture here from the D’Aulaires’ Norse Gods and Giants, which I used to pore over as a kid:

There are a lot of things they could do to each realm to make it unique and otherworldly.
