My first attempt at telling a ghost-story in verse, as usual for r/shortscarystories: Nice. That flowed well just like a normally written story.

Some guy also asked if he could draw illustrations for it, which was really nice. Hope he doesn’t turn out like the guy who asked to narrate the other story…

As if I needed more stress in my life, I’ve now got some idiot on Reddit haranguing me to say that my stories are “pseudo intellectual vomit” in which “any message you were trying to send is lost in your forced fanciful style. There is also no reason to feel invested.” (I responded in French just to tweak him re: the “pseudo-intellectual” crack.)
Of course this is just some dummy online, but it just added another stressor to a lousy (and, aptly, rainy) day. So much for this year’s being better than the last one.
(Please excuse the whining. I feel like I need to get it off my chest somehow, somewhere.)

I'm sorry you had to put up with that.

I think I usually take criticism decently, but today was just a lousy day for me, and this was—what?—the cherry on top. Oh well.

OK, this is me whining about my own stuff again (I intend to read the stories in this thread), but I really don’t understand Reddit.
A story that I wrote on the fly and put hardly any effort into is the best-rated thing I’ve done there, and a story that took time and effort to write gets one (!) upvote and a comment that it’s too subtle.
When, for their writer, they’re at the same level of subtlety (or lack thereof). I honestly don’t get it.

The sooner you accept that it is an enigmatic beast that doesn't know what it wants, the better you will sleep at night. What is the story, by the way?

What is the story, by the way? Thanks, doc. Now may I ramble to you about all my other problems? I haven’t posted either one here yet, but the one that did well is this. The one that’s been up for 4 hrs. and has only one upvote (a new ignominious record for me!) is this. I’m gonna start on reading the stories you’ve been recommending here.

Oh, it looks like a few more upvotes. That’s nice.

For what it's worth, "Black Lantern" isn't bad. If I had to wager a guess, it's probably the Pandora's Box element that's clicked with people. "Start of the Season", ah, it's one of the THOSE deals. In other words, never check into that hotel earlier than the summer rush.
