Digressing from the subject, but apropos of King, have you heard of the opera adaptation of The Shining, WeirdRaptor ? I’d love to see it or at least watch/listen to a recording; composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell have done great work in other operas, and this one got great reviews. The Minnesota Opera’s reviving it in May (or, at least, supposed to be reviving it; who knows, with corona now…). I love the Met here, but I wish they’d do some new operas along with the warhorses. First I've heard of it, honestly. Man, they'll just make a musical/opera out of ANYTHING.

These days it seems like people only want to go to the theater if they already know the story, which makes no sense to me at all. Surprisingly, opera tends to be more daring nowadays (librettist Campbell has already written a comic one based on the Burke and Hare Murders and one based on Volpone, both great ideas) possibly because the subsidies mean operas don’t necessarily have to turn in huge profits. And I can imagine The Shining working as an opera; its emotions are big enough to be operatic, at least. I’d rather see a new opera than the zillionth production of The Magic Flute, this time with the entire cast naked!

Plays used to be a part of oral tradition or were adapted from The Bible, or told new stories in already existing mythologies (like the Greeks did). Then they started making more original stories not based on any specific source, and then it was mostly adaptations again, and then... It'll be original works again before you know it.

Would it better for this topic if I moved it back to "General Media," where it can get more attention?

Salzmark ArArArchStanton I've moved this topic back to "General Media", simply because this is a type of media. Besides, the stickied topics here are less crowded.

You guys may get a kick out of this; it’s not the best written, but I certainly enjoyed it. Told the writer, who won the contest that my “Locked Chambers” placed in second for, that someone really ought to do a comic-book adaptation. From Reddit.

It taps perfectly into the mindset of someone actively trying to become a superhero instead of simply stepping up in the midst of circumstance.
