Disney+ Hits 26.5 Million Paid Subscribers Since Launch

Disney has signed up 26.5 million people to Disney+, the company said Tuesday afternoon, ending three months of speculation about the early performance of the high-profile new streaming service.

The numbers beat expectations for the $7-per-month service, which analysts anticipated would have between 20 million and 25 million subscribers. The company said it defines a subscriber as any user for which it recognizes subscription revenue. Someone who pays for the Disney streaming bundle to get Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu at a discounted price will be counted as a subscriber for each of those services.

Disney+ is currently only available in a handful of countries, including the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico, but will begin to roll out more widely this spring. With a 26.5 million base, it is still far behind streaming leader Netflix, which has nearly 68 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada and 167 million subscribers worldwide. Disney-owned Hulu, meanwhile, has 30.4 million U.S. subscribers, and ESPN+ has 6.6 million subscribers, the company also reported Tuesday.

I assumed it would be less than 20 million at this point.

I'd be very interested to see what their most watching programming is, and what they think is driving these numbers.

You know what somebody needs to write.  A dark horror/comedy style film about Disney getting so rich they decide to take entertainment beyond the screen and parks and into the real world, by trying to create actual superheroes.  And it goes horribly wrong, so you wind up with a monstrous tortured spider guy, a group of super soldier criminals, a guy with a mech suit who just likes picking up random cars on the highway and throwing them off bridges.  Dark

And that is what going to be tricky about the streaming wars. The Goal for them is to keep people subscribed but without the wanted content it's going to be a uphill battle.
